Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher of the Enlightenment who lived and taught in Königsberg, Prussia, all his life. His Critique of Pure Reason (1781) and his moral philosophy, built on the 'categorical imperative' set out in the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals (1785), are among the most influential works in Western thought.
